Men’s Soccer
Trying to follow up their strong effort vs Monmouth, Northeastern played a competitive game and showed some grit attempting to mount a comeback from a two goal deficit. However, some critical mistakes late in the game hindered their chances to complete their comeback.
September 17: Northeastern 2, Dartmouth 3
After Dartmouth struck first in the 22nd minute, Bryce Flowers answered back with a penalty kick goal.
The Big Green got two of their own to extend the lead to 3-1, but Matty Gardner cleaned up a corner kick to give the Huskies a fighting chance in the 82nd minute.
A costly red card to Morris Matthews after the goal gave Dartmouth the upper hand, and they were able to drain the clock while playing keepaway.
Women’s Soccer
The Huskies came out on the wrong side of a pair of closely-contested conference matches. Despite a strong effort from goalkeeper Eliza Teplow in both matchups, a sputtering offense couldn’t do enough to secure a victory.
September 18: Northeastern 0, UNCW 1
In an evening that was tilted in favor of the Seahawks as they outshot Northeastern 15-6 and had a substantial corner kick advantage (7-4). Eliza Teplow kept the Huskies in the game with 8 saves, but UNCW broke through with a penalty kick goal near the end of the first half.
That single goal proved decisive, as the Huskies failed to find the back of the net.
September 21: Northeastern 1, Charleston 2
The Huskies got on the board first with a great pass from Bridget Gleason finished off by Olivia Penn:
It was holding on for dear life from that point forward, as the Cougars poured on 22 shots in the direction of Eliza Teplow. They broke through in the 29th minute and took the lead for good in the 66th minute.
Field Hockey
After a pair of losses last week, Northeastern split their two matches of the week. Both were low scoring affairs, featuring only a total of 5 goals across the 8+ periods of play.
September 19: Northeastern 2, Maine 1 (OT)
The Huskies scored first on a penalty stroke from Camille Armaganian:
However, they went quiet as the Black Bears evened the score, and the game entered an overtime period. Early in overtime, Anna-Kate Domingue lifted the Huskies to the win, snapping their 2-game losing streak.
September 21: Northeastern 0, Harvard 2
Northeastern faced a tough matchup against the nationally ranked Harvard Crimson (#5), and the offense sputtered. They failed to break through, mustering only 5 shots to Harvard’s 16 shots.
Volleyball
The volleyball team opened conference play against 2024 conference tournament participant Stony Brook. They showed well in a series split, sparking hope that this year’s squad will have a chance to return to the conference tournament this season.
September 19: Northeastern 1, Stony Brook 3
The Huskies jumped out to the lead with a first-set win, but soon succumbed to the defensive adjustments of Stony Brook.
After converting 13 kills in set #1, they didn’t exceed 10 kills in any of the following matches. The Seawolves capitalized, convincingly winning the next three sets.
September 20: Northeastern 3, Stony Brook 2
A thrilling rematch went the distance, as alternating set victories left brought the squads to a decisive fifth set.
In the final set, Northeastern jumped over the Seawolves with a flurry of kills from Emma Rowell. They allowed consecutive points against just once early in the set, and charged to the finish to leave New York with a split.
Men’s Cross Country
The Huskies took first place at the Maribel Sanchez Invitational, led by freshman Dawson French’s third place finish. Ryan Sarney turned in a notable performance with an 8-second improvement over his personal best.
Women’s Cross Country
Emily Wickard led the way for Northeastern with a sixth place finish at the Maribel Sanchez Invitational. The Huskies finished in third place.
Notes
⚾ Kevin Casey returned to Northeastern as an assistant coach after a successful run as head coach at Johnson & Wales University.
🏀 Men’s basketball is participating in the Flutie 5K for Autism on October 26.
